NBC wanted a unique method of transforming humans into creatures for a new television series and we were challenged with a test. The studio responded so well to our creature morph that we were awarded the pilot and 6 seasons of the series.
Each shot begins with the digital removal of the live action actors head and the the markers on their face being tracked to match the CG creature to. The creature designs begin on paper then they are 3D sculpted in the computer, along with a 3D representation of the actor. These 3D models are then surfaced to look photo-real before being digitally lit to match the live action plate. Digital hair is styled and the 3D models are animated with expressions and match moved to the live-action footage. The final 3D rendered results are then painstakingly integrated into the live-action footage and color matched to create a seamless final image.
Over 6 seasons, our team created and produced 1000+ complex creature+VFX shots for Grimm in more than 75 episodes.
